What traffic density measures
Traffic density is the number of vehicles occupying a given length of roadway, usually expressed as vehicles per kilometer per lane. It’s one of the three core traffic flow variables (alongside speed and flow rate) used in transportation engineering.
How this calculator works
Enter the number of vehicles observed on a stretch of road, the length of that stretch, and how many lanes it has. The calculator divides vehicle count by (length x lanes) to get density, then converts that into an average spacing between vehicles for an intuitive sense of how tightly packed traffic is.
This is a simplified, general-purpose estimate; real traffic studies also account for vehicle length, speed variation, and lane-changing behavior.
