What this calculator does

Every character a computer stores is really just a number, and that number can be written in binary (base 2). This tool converts text characters into their binary form, one 8-bit byte per character.

How it works

Pick the characters of a short phrase from the dropdowns. Each character’s standard ASCII code (its decimal number, 0–127 for the letters, digits, space, and punctuation used here) is converted to base 2 and padded to 8 bits, since a full byte is 8 bits.
