How Tent Size Is Estimated
Tent “capacity” ratings from manufacturers are usually based on sleeping pads placed edge to edge with almost no extra room, which is why most campers find it more comfortable to size up.
This calculator estimates the floor area you need by multiplying the number of campers by a square-footage-per-person figure that depends on your desired comfort level, then recommends going up one or two capacity sizes above your actual headcount if you want room for gear or extra comfort.
This is a general planning guideline — always check the manufacturer’s actual floor dimensions, since tent shapes (dome, cabin, tunnel) affect how usable the rated floor area really is.
