How Tablecloth Sizing Works

A tablecloth needs to cover the tabletop plus hang down an extra amount on every side, called the “drop.” A casual drop is usually 6-8 inches, while a formal floor-length drop can be 24-30 inches.

For a rectangular or square table, the finished cloth size equals the table’s length and width plus twice the drop (once for each side). For a round table, the cloth diameter equals the table diameter plus twice the drop.

Casual dining: 6-8 inch drop
Standard everyday use: 10-15 inch drop
Formal / floor-length: 24-30 inch drop
