🚶 Steps to Kilometers Calculator
Turn your step count into an estimated distance in kilometers, based on a stride length calculated from your height.
How steps convert to distance
Fitness trackers and pedometers estimate distance from your step count using your stride length — the distance covered by one step. Since taller people generally take longer strides, height is the simplest reliable way to estimate it.
The formula
This calculator estimates stride length as roughly 41.3%–41.5% of height, a commonly used approximation for average walking stride (women tend to average slightly shorter strides than men at the same height, hence the small gender adjustment). Distance in kilometers is then simply steps × stride length, converted to kilometers.
Actual stride length varies with walking speed, terrain, age, and individual gait, so this is an estimate — a wearable device that measures your actual stride, or a measured-distance calibration walk, will always be more accurate for your own body.
