How this calculator adds it up

Each ingredient you enter is multiplied by a typical calorie value per unit (per cup, ounce or tablespoon), based on general USDA-style nutrition averages for common salad ingredients, and the results are summed into one total. Leafy greens and raw vegetables are very low in calories, while cheese, nuts, croutons and dressing are far more calorie-dense in much smaller amounts.

Why dressing and toppings matter most

It’s common for a salad’s dressing, cheese and croutons to contribute more calories than the vegetables underneath them, since fats and refined carbohydrates pack far more energy per gram than leafy greens. This calculator highlights how much of your total comes from dressing alone, since that’s often the easiest place to adjust portion size.

  • Leafy greens: roughly 10 kcal per cup
  • Regular dressing: roughly 70 kcal per tablespoon
  • Croutons and nuts add calories quickly in small volumes

Values are general nutrition averages and will vary by brand, preparation and exact ingredient; use this for general meal planning and educational purposes rather than precise dietary tracking.
