Rectangle Fence Perimeter Calculator
Find the total perimeter of a rectangular yard or lot, plus how many fence sections and posts you’ll need to enclose it.
What this calculator does
The rectangle fence perimeter calculator finds the total distance around a rectangular yard or lot, then estimates how many fence sections and posts are needed to enclose it.
The formula
Perimeter of a rectangle is 2 x (length + width). Subtracting your gate width from the perimeter gives the length that actually needs fence panels, which is then divided by your post spacing to find the number of sections (rounded up, since you can’t buy a partial section). One post is needed at the start of each section, plus two extra posts to frame the gate opening.
This is a general layout estimate. Corner posts, gate hardware, and uneven terrain can change the exact post count, so confirm the final layout on-site before ordering materials.
