Potassium Intake Calculator
Estimate your recommended daily potassium intake based on your age, sex, and life stage.
Why potassium matters
Potassium is an essential mineral that helps regulate fluid balance, nerve signals, and muscle contractions, including the heartbeat. Diets rich in potassium from fruits, vegetables, legumes, and dairy are associated with healthy blood pressure levels.
How this calculator works
The calculator looks up the standard Adequate Intake (AI) for potassium based on your age, sex, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding, using published dietary reference values. Adult targets are generally higher for men (around 3,400 mg/day) than for women (around 2,600 mg/day), with somewhat higher targets during pregnancy and lactation.
If you enter your typical daily potassium intake, the calculator compares it to your target so you can see whether your diet is meeting recommended levels.
This tool is for general educational and dietary planning purposes only. People with kidney disease or those taking medications that affect potassium levels should follow guidance from their healthcare provider rather than a general target.
