What is polynomial long division?

Polynomial long division divides one polynomial (the dividend) by another (the divisor) of equal or lower degree, producing a quotient polynomial and a remainder polynomial, just like long division does for regular numbers.

How this calculator works

Enter the coefficients of your dividend (up to degree 4) and divisor (up to degree 2), using 0 for any missing power. At each step, the calculator divides the leading term of the current working polynomial by the leading term of the divisor, multiplies that result by the whole divisor, and subtracts it from the working polynomial — repeating until the remaining degree is lower than the divisor’s degree.

The result is a quotient polynomial plus a remainder polynomial. When the remainder is zero, the divisor divides the dividend evenly (the divisor is a factor of the dividend).
