How pizza value is compared
A pizza’s edible area grows with the square of its radius, not its diameter, so a modest jump in size can add a lot more pizza than it looks like at first glance. This calculator computes each pizza’s area using the standard circle formula (Area = π × radius²) and then divides the price by that area to get a cost per square inch.
Why bigger is often cheaper per bite
Because area scales quadratically with diameter, a 16-inch pizza has roughly 78% more area than a 12-inch pizza, even though the diameter only grew by a third. That’s why a larger pizza priced only a little higher than a smaller one is frequently the better deal per square inch.
- Area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)²
- Cost per square inch = price ÷ area
- Lower cost per square inch means better value
This comparison assumes both pizzas have similar toppings, crust style and quality; a thin-crust pizza and a deep-dish pizza of the same size won’t give you the same amount of food per square inch in practice.
