What this calculator does

This tool estimates the yearly carbon footprint of the bags you use for grocery or retail shopping, based on how often you shop, how many bags you use each trip, which material you choose, and how many times you reuse each bag before it’s discarded.

How the estimate is calculated

Different bag materials carry very different manufacturing footprints per bag: a thin single-use plastic (HDPE) bag is typically around 0.033 kg CO2e to produce, a paper bag around 0.055 kg CO2e (paper requires more energy and water to manufacture), a reusable non-woven polypropylene bag around 0.21 kg CO2e, and a reusable cotton tote around 2.1 kg CO2e due to the water and land intensity of cotton farming. The calculator divides the number of bags you actually need by how many times you reuse each one, since a bag reused 20 times only needs to be manufactured once per 20 uses.

The break-even figure shows roughly how many times a given bag type must be reused before its per-use footprint drops below that of a single throwaway plastic bag — which is why reuse count matters more than material choice alone.
