🥫 Pantry Stockpile Calculator
Estimate how much dry pantry food and drinking water to keep on hand for your household, based on standard household emergency preparedness guidelines.
How This Calculator Works
This calculator estimates a basic long-term food and water stockpile using widely referenced household emergency-preparedness ratios (similar to those published by long-term food storage guides and general readiness organizations). It multiplies your number of people by the number of days you want to plan for, then applies standard per-person, per-day quantities for staple categories: grains, legumes, fats and oils, sugar, powdered milk, and salt.
What the Categories Mean
- Grains: rice, wheat, oats, pasta, and similar staples — the largest share of a basic stockpile by weight.
- Legumes: dried beans, lentils, and peas, a shelf-stable protein source.
- Fats/oils, sugar, powdered milk, and salt: smaller supporting categories that round out a basic diet.
- Water: calculated separately at roughly one gallon per person per day for drinking and basic needs, increased for hot climates or higher activity levels.
The bucket estimate assumes about 33 lbs of dry goods per standard 5-gallon bucket, a common rule of thumb for bulk dry storage. These figures are general planning estimates for educational purposes only — actual needs vary with age, health, activity, and personal dietary preferences, so adjust quantities to fit your household.
