This calculator estimates the total mass of that waste for a household, office, or other group over a chosen time period, based on typical usage habits.
How the estimate is calculated
The calculator multiplies the number of people by the number of days and each person’s daily or weekly usage rate to get total item counts for masks, glove pieces, and sanitizer bottles. It then applies typical average weights per item (about 4 grams per disposable mask, 5 grams per glove, and 20 grams per empty sanitizer bottle) to estimate total plastic mass, and a widely used rough conversion factor (about 6 kg of CO2-equivalent per kg of single-use plastic) to give an approximate carbon footprint.
