How mesh to micron conversion works
Mesh size describes the number of openings per linear inch in a sieve, while microns measure the actual particle size that can pass through those openings. Because mesh count and opening size have an inverse relationship, a widely used approximation formula is: microns ≈ 14832.4 ÷ mesh number.
This calculator applies that standard approximation in both directions, letting you enter either a mesh number to find the corresponding particle size, or a micron size to estimate the equivalent mesh count. The millimeter equivalent is also shown for convenience.
Actual sieve opening sizes vary slightly between different mesh standards (such as U.S. Standard vs. Tyler), so this tool is intended for general reference and educational purposes rather than precision laboratory sieve certification.
