What effective radiation dose means

Effective dose, measured in millisieverts (mSv), is a standardized way to compare radiation exposure from different medical imaging exams, accounting for the type of radiation and which body parts are exposed.

How this calculator works

Select an exam type and the calculator multiplies its published average effective dose by the number of exams entered to give an estimated total. For context, it also shows the equivalent number of years of natural background radiation that dose would represent, using an average background rate of about 3.1 mSv per year.

These are population-average published estimates; actual dose varies by equipment, protocol, and patient size. This tool is for general educational and planning purposes and does not replace guidance from a radiologist or other qualified healthcare professional.
