Why marathon pace matters

A marathon is 26.2 miles (42.195 km), and holding a steady, sustainable pace across that distance is one of the biggest factors in a good race day. Starting too fast is one of the most common mistakes marathon runners make.

How this calculator works

Enter the finish time you’re targeting, and the calculator divides it evenly across the full marathon distance to give you the average pace per mile and per kilometer you’ll need to hold. It also estimates where you should be at the 10K and half marathon points if you run an even pace throughout.

Real races rarely go perfectly even — hills, weather, and fatigue all play a role — but knowing your target pace gives you a clear reference to check yourself against on race day. This tool is for general training and planning purposes.
