Charpy Pendulum Impact Energy
The Charpy impact test measures how much energy a material specimen absorbs before fracturing under a swinging pendulum hammer. The pendulum is released from a known height (angle α from vertical), swings through the specimen, and continues to a lower angle β after breaking it.
The absorbed energy equals the pendulum’s loss in potential energy: E = mgL(cosβ − cosα), where m is the pendulum mass, L is the arm length (pivot to center of mass), and g is gravitational acceleration. Higher absorbed energy indicates a tougher, more ductile material; low values indicate brittleness. This is a standard mechanical-testing reference calculation for general educational use.
