⏱️ Thermal Diffusivity Calculator

Find a material’s thermal diffusivity, which describes how quickly it responds to temperature changes, from its thermal conductivity, density, and specific heat capacity.

W/(m·K)
kg/m³
J/(kg·K)

What This Calculator Does

Thermal diffusivity measures how quickly a material’s temperature adjusts to a change in its surroundings, combining its ability to conduct heat with its capacity to store it. Materials with high diffusivity respond to temperature changes quickly, while low-diffusivity materials respond slowly.

The Formula

The calculator uses α = k / (ρ × cp), where k is thermal conductivity, ρ is density, and cp is specific heat capacity. Because the SI result (in m²/s) is typically a very small number, the calculator also displays the result converted to mm²/s for easier reading.

This calculation assumes constant material properties over the relevant temperature range. Provided for general educational and engineering reference purposes.
