What This Calculator Does
Thermal efficiency measures how effectively a heat engine or thermal system converts input heat energy into useful work. No real heat engine can reach 100% efficiency, as required by the second law of thermodynamics; some energy is always lost as waste heat.
The Formula
The calculator uses η = (W_output / Q_input) × 100%, where W_output is the useful work produced and Q_input is the total heat energy supplied to the system. The difference between the two represents the heat energy wasted, typically released to the environment.
Real systems (engines, power plants, boilers) are also bounded by the theoretical Carnot efficiency limit based on their operating temperatures. This calculator reports the practical, measured efficiency and is intended for general educational and planning purposes.
