Estimating hiking time
This calculator uses Naismith’s Rule, a long-standing rule of thumb used by hikers and mountaineers to estimate how long a hike will take based on distance and elevation gain.
The formula
Naismith’s Rule allows 1 hour for every 5 km of distance, plus an additional hour for every 600 meters of elevation gain. Calorie burn is estimated using a MET value that increases with steeper average grades, multiplied by your total load (body weight plus pack weight) and hike duration.
These are general estimates — actual hiking time varies with fitness, trail conditions, weather, rest breaks, and pack weight. Always plan hikes with a safety margin and check current trail conditions before heading out.
