What This Calculator Does

Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) figures from a utility bill, a flight, or a product’s carbon label are hard to picture on their own. This calculator converts any amount of CO2e into everyday equivalents, such as miles driven, gallons of gasoline, tree seedlings, smartphone charges, and a year of home electricity use, so the number becomes easier to relate to.

How the Conversion Works

The calculator uses standard, publicly published emissions factors similar to those in the US EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies methodology: roughly 0.40 kg CO2 per mile driven by an average gasoline passenger car, 8.887 kg CO2 per gallon of gasoline combusted, about 0.06 metric tons of CO2 sequestered by one tree seedling grown for 10 years, roughly 8.2 grams of CO2 per smartphone charge, and about 5.7 metric tons of CO2 for a typical home’s yearly electricity use. Your entered CO2e amount is converted to metric tons internally, then multiplied by each factor.

Why It’s Useful

Turning an abstract emissions figure into a relatable comparison makes it easier to gauge the scale of an activity’s climate impact and to communicate it to others.
