What Is Gravitational Time Dilation?

General relativity predicts that clocks run slower the closer they are to a massive object, because gravity curves spacetime. This effect is measurable and is accounted for in systems like GPS satellites.

The Formula

t_local = t_far × √(1 − rs/r), where rs = 2GM/c² is the Schwarzschild radius of the body, r is the distance from its center, G is the gravitational constant, and c is the speed of light. As r approaches rs, the dilation factor approaches zero.
