The Grass Seed Calculator estimates how many pounds of seed you need to establish or overseed a lawn, based on your total area and the recommended seeding rate for your grass species.
How the formula works
Seed amount is calculated as total seed = (area ÷ 1,000) × seeding rate per 1,000 sq ft. Fine-bladed grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and warm-season grasses like bermuda and zoysia use much lower rates because their seeds are smaller and denser per pound, while tall fescue and perennial ryegrass use higher rates. Overseeding an existing lawn typically uses about half the new-lawn seeding rate, since it’s filling in gaps rather than starting from bare soil.
