What This Calculator Does
This tool estimates how many floor joists are needed to frame a floor of a given length at a standard on-center (o.c.) spacing, a common early step in floor framing takeoffs.
The Formula
The floor length is divided by the joist spacing to find how many spaces fit, rounded up, and one extra joist is added to cap the run: number of joists = ceiling(floor length / spacing) + 1. Common residential spacings are 12, 16, 19.2, and 24 inches on center, with 16 inches being the most typical for standard floor loads.
This is a simplified quantity estimate for material planning — it does not account for doubled joists around openings (stairwells, ducts), rim joists, or blocking. Actual joist size, spacing, and span limits should be confirmed against your local building code span tables or a structural engineer.
