What this calculator does
Reel manufacturers rate spool capacity for one specific line diameter (usually printed on the spool, such as ‘150 yards / 10 lb mono’). This calculator converts that rating to a different line diameter — useful when switching between monofilament, fluorocarbon, and braided lines, which all have different diameters for the same strength rating.
The formula
Line capacity scales with the cross-sectional area of the line, which is proportional to diameter squared. So: New Capacity = Rated Capacity × (Rated Diameter ÷ New Diameter)². A thinner line packs more length onto the same spool, while a thicker line holds less — for example, halving the line diameter roughly quadruples the length that fits.
This is a geometric estimate that assumes similar winding density; real-world capacity can vary slightly with line stiffness, coating, and how tightly the line is spooled.
