What this calculator does

Carrying capacity (usually written as K) is the maximum population size that a habitat can sustain indefinitely given the resources available, without degrading the resource base itself. This calculator gives a simplified resource-based estimate of K for planning and teaching purposes.

How it’s calculated

The tool multiplies habitat area by the renewable resource produced per unit area each year (such as forage, prey biomass, or another limiting resource) to get the total resource pool. Dividing that pool by how much resource one individual needs per year gives the estimated carrying capacity: K = (Area x Resource per Area) / Consumption per Individual. Comparing the current population to K shows whether a population is below capacity (room to grow), near capacity (stable), or above it (likely resource stress and eventual decline).

Real ecosystems are more complex than a single limiting resource, and predator-prey dynamics, seasonality, and disease also shape actual population limits, so treat this as an educational approximation rather than a precise wildlife management figure.
