What Is Gauss’s Law?
Gauss’s Law relates the total electric flux passing through a closed surface to the total electric charge enclosed within it. It is one of Maxwell’s four fundamental equations of electromagnetism.
The Formula
Φ = Q_enclosed / ε₀, where Q_enclosed is the net charge inside the closed (Gaussian) surface and ε₀ is the vacuum permittivity (≈8.854 × 10⁻¹² F/m). Notably, the flux depends only on enclosed charge, not on the surface’s exact shape or size.
