What this calculator does

The Walking Calorie Calculator estimates how many calories you burn during a walk based on your body weight, walking speed, and duration.

How the calculation works

The tool uses the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) metabolic equation for walking on flat ground: VO2 = 0.1 x speed (m/min) + 3.5. This formula applies best to walking speeds up to roughly 4-4.5 mph; above that, running mechanics take over and calorie burn per mile actually rises. Dividing VO2 by 3.5 gives the MET value, and calories per minute are found using kcal/min = MET x 3.5 x weight (kg) / 200, multiplied by duration for the total.

This is an estimate for general fitness and activity-planning purposes. Actual calorie burn varies with incline, terrain, stride efficiency, and individual fitness level.
