What this calculator does

This calculator estimates how many vegetable seeds you should plant and buy so you end up with the number of plants you actually want, after accounting for seeds that won’t germinate.

How the math works

It first finds how many seed positions fit along your rows by dividing total row length by the spacing between seeds, then multiplies by your number of rows to get the target plant count. Since not every seed sprouts, it divides that target by your expected germination rate (found on most seed packets) to get the number of seeds to actually sow, then converts that into packets based on how many seeds come in each packet.

Germination rates vary by seed age, storage, and growing conditions, so treat the result as a helpful buying guide and consider rounding up slightly for insurance. This tool is for general garden planning purposes.
