How this calculator works
Every UK coin has a fixed, official weight set by the Royal Mint, so the total weight of a pile of same-denomination coins is simply the number of coins multiplied by the weight of one coin. Pick a denomination, enter how many you have, and the calculator multiplies the two together to give you the total in grams, kilograms, and ounces.
The reference weights used
This calculator uses the official current circulating specifications: 1p = 3.56g, 2p = 7.12g, 5p = 3.25g, 10p = 6.5g, 20p = 5.0g, 50p = 8.0g, £1 = 8.75g, and £2 = 12.0g. Note that some older coin designs — such as the pre-2012 larger 5p and 10p, or the round £1 coin retired in 2017 — were slightly heavier than today’s versions, so a mixed bag of old and new coins will weigh a little more than this calculator estimates.
