What This Calculator Does

This tool calculates torque, the rotational equivalent of force, produced when a force is applied at some distance from a pivot or axis of rotation, such as tightening a bolt with a wrench.

The Formula

Torque is calculated as τ = r × F × sin(θ), where τ is torque in newton-meters (N·m), r is the length of the lever arm in meters, F is the applied force in newtons, and θ is the angle between the force vector and the lever arm. When the force is applied perpendicular to the lever arm (θ = 90°), sin(θ) equals 1 and the formula simplifies to τ = r × F.

Practical Notes

Torque is central to mechanics, automotive engineering, and everyday tool use. A longer lever arm or a larger force both increase torque, while applying force at an angle other than 90 degrees reduces the effective torque.
