Mass versus weight

Mass (kilograms) is an amount of matter, constant everywhere. Weight is the gravitational force acting on that mass, measured in Newtons, and it changes depending on the local gravitational field.

The formula

Weight is calculated using Newton’s second law: F = m × g, where m is mass in kilograms and g is gravitational acceleration (9.80665 m/s2 on Earth’s surface by default, but you can change it to calculate weight on the Moon, Mars, or elsewhere).

This calculator gives an idealized weight at standard gravity; actual local gravity varies slightly with altitude and latitude on Earth. This tool is for general physics reference and educational purposes.
