Where the warp speed formula comes from
Warp factor is a fictional faster-than-light speed scale from Star Trek, not a real unit of physics. In the original series’ commonly used convention, a ship’s speed in multiples of the speed of light is simply the warp factor cubed: speed = c x (warp factor)³. So warp 2 is 8 times light speed, warp 5 is 125 times light speed, and so on.
How this calculator works
Enter a warp factor and the calculator cubes it to get your speed as a multiple of light speed (c = 299,792.458 km/s), then converts that into km/s and km/h. If you also enter a trip distance in light-years, it estimates how long the trip would take at that warp factor by dividing the distance by the speed multiple.
This is a lighthearted sci-fi math tool for fans and general education about exponential scaling — it has no basis in real physics, since faster-than-light travel is not possible under Einstein’s theory of relativity as currently understood. Different Star Trek series and technical manuals also use other, more complex warp scales, so treat this as one popular fictional convention, not a universal standard.
