What is Sustainable Growth Rate?

The Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) is the maximum rate at which a company can grow its sales and earnings using only internally generated funds, without issuing new debt or equity.

The formula

SGR = Return on Equity × Retention Ratio. A company aiming to grow faster than its SGR will typically need to raise external capital, change its dividend policy, or improve profitability.
