What this calculator does

This tool calculates the weight of one or more rectangular steel plates based on their length, width, and thickness, using the standard density of carbon steel.

The formula

Weight = length × width × thickness ÷ 1728 (to convert cubic inches to cubic feet) × 490 lb/ft³ (standard steel density), multiplied by the number of plates.

This standard density applies to common mild and carbon steels; stainless and alloy steels can vary slightly (typically 485 to 500 lb/ft³). Confirm with your mill for exact alloy specifications.
