What this calculator does
The sand calculator estimates how much sand you need to cover an area — such as a sandbox, paver base, or play area — at a given depth.
The formula
Volume in cubic feet equals length times width times depth (converted to feet), then divided by 27 for cubic yards. Weight is estimated using a typical dry sand density of about 1.35 tons per cubic yard, and that weight is also converted into a count of standard 50 lb retail bags.
This tool gives a general estimate for planning purposes. Wet or compacted sand can weigh more than dry, loose sand, so treat the bag count as approximate.
