What This Calculator Does
This calculator figures out how to dilute a concentrated stock solution down to a lower target concentration — a very common task when preparing reagents in a lab or classroom.
The Formula
Dilution follows the conservation-of-moles relationship known as the dilution equation: C₁V₁ = C₂V₂, where C₁ and V₁ are the concentration and volume of the starting stock solution, and C₂ and V₂ are the concentration and volume you want after dilution. Rearranged for the final volume, this becomes V₂ = (C₁ × V₁) ÷ C₂. The amount of water (or other solvent) to add is simply V₂ − V₁.
A Few Notes
- Concentration and volume units just need to be consistent with each other on both sides of the equation.
- You can’t dilute a solution to a concentration higher than the original stock — if that’s entered, the target is capped at the stock concentration.
