What This Calculator Does
The sod calculator estimates how many individual sod pieces (rolls or slabs) and pallets you should order to cover a lawn area, including a buffer for waste from trimming around edges, curves, and obstacles.
The Formula
The base area is simply length multiplied by width. A waste buffer percentage is then added to account for cuts and irregular shapes: Area With Waste = Length × Width × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100). That adjusted area is divided by the coverage of a single sod roll or slab (commonly around 9 square feet, though this varies by supplier) and rounded up, since sod is sold in whole pieces: Pieces Needed = ceil(Area With Waste ÷ Coverage per Piece). Pallets are estimated using a common industry approximation of about 450 square feet per pallet.
Tips for Ordering
Always confirm the exact coverage per roll or slab and per pallet with your specific sod supplier, since dimensions differ between growers and grass types. A waste buffer of 5-10% is typical for simple rectangular lawns, while yards with many curves, trees, or beds often need 10-15% or more. This tool is for general landscaping planning purposes.
