How scrap silver value is calculated

Like gold, the value of a scrap silver item depends on how much actual silver it contains. Sterling silver is 92.5% pure, fine silver is 99.9% pure, older coin silver is typically 90%, and silverplated items have only a thin silver coating with negligible melt value.

The formula

The calculator converts your item’s weight to troy ounces, applies the purity fraction for the selected type to get the pure silver content, and multiplies that by the current spot price per troy ounce to estimate the melt value.

This is a raw melt-value estimate for general reference only. Buyers typically pay less than melt value to cover refining costs and profit margin, and spot prices change throughout each trading day, so use a current quote for the most accurate estimate.
