What scientific notation is

Scientific notation writes a number as a coefficient between 1 and 10 (or between -10 and -1 for negatives) multiplied by a power of ten: N = c × 10e. It’s a compact way to represent very large or very small numbers.

How this calculator works

Enter any number and the calculator finds the exponent e by taking the base-10 logarithm of its absolute value and rounding down, then divides the original number by 10e to get the coefficient c. For example, 123,400 becomes 1.234 × 10⁵, and 0.00056 becomes 5.6 × 10⁻⁴.

Use the decimal places option to control how many digits of the coefficient are shown. This tool is for general math and educational purposes.
