How to size a rug

A common interior design guideline is to leave a consistent, even border of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the walls, rather than pushing the rug wall-to-wall or leaving it too small to anchor the furniture in the room.

How this calculator works

Enter your room’s length and width, then choose a floor margin: 12 inches works well for smaller or cozier rooms, 18 inches is the most common standard recommendation, and 24 inches suits larger, more spacious rooms. The calculator subtracts twice the margin (both sides) from each room dimension to suggest a rug size and area.

This is a general design guideline; furniture layout (such as wanting all sofa legs on the rug) may lead you to size up or down from this recommendation.
