What this calculator does

A raw score is the original, unstandardized value in a data set, such as a test score or measurement. This calculator converts a standardized z-score back into its corresponding raw score, given the distribution’s mean and standard deviation.

How the calculation works

The formula is X = mean + (z x standard deviation), the inverse of the standard z-score formula z = (X – mean) / standard deviation. The calculator also estimates the percentile rank of that score using the cumulative standard normal distribution, which tells you roughly what percentage of values in a normal distribution fall below that score.

This calculation assumes the underlying data is approximately normally distributed. It is intended for general statistics education and planning purposes, such as interpreting standardized test results.
