Why the ratio changes with temperature
Snow-to-liquid ratio describes how many inches of snow one inch of melted liquid produces. Near freezing, a common baseline ratio is about 10:1, but colder air tends to produce drier, fluffier snow with a higher ratio (sometimes 20:1 or more), while temperatures near or above freezing produce wetter, denser snow closer to 10:1 or lower.
This calculator uses a simplified linear approximation of that relationship, clamped between 10:1 and 30:1, based on general guidance used by forecasters. Actual ratios vary with atmospheric conditions well above the surface, so treat this as a general planning estimate.
