Why tip on the net price?
Common tipping etiquette calls for calculating a tip on the net, pre-tax subtotal of a bill rather than on the total after sales tax has been added. Since sales tax goes to the government and not the server, basing your tip on the net price reflects the actual value of the service received.
The formula
This calculator applies your chosen tip percentage directly to the net price: Tip = Net Price × (Tip % / 100). It then adds the tax and tip separately to the net price to show your full total bill, and also shows what that tip works out to as a percentage of the total including tax, for comparison.
