What This Calculator Does

This tool converts radiation dose values between the SI units (sievert, gray) and the older but still widely used units (rem, rad), letting you translate between medical, scientific, and legacy reporting formats.

The Formula

1 sievert (Sv) = 100 rem, so 1 rem = 10 millisievert (mSv). Similarly, 1 gray (Gy) = 100 rad. Gray measures absorbed dose while sievert measures equivalent (biological) dose; for radiation types with a radiation weighting factor of 1 — such as gamma rays, X-rays, and beta particles — 1 Gy of absorbed dose corresponds numerically to 1 Sv of equivalent dose, and this calculator uses that assumption.

Important Caveat

For alpha particles or neutron radiation, the weighting factor is greater than 1, so gray and sievert values will differ from what this calculator shows. This tool is intended for general educational and planning purposes, not for clinical, regulatory, or safety-critical radiation assessments.
