What prorated rent is

Prorated rent is the portion of a full month’s rent charged when a tenant only occupies the unit for part of a billing period, such as moving in mid-month or moving out before the month ends. It ensures tenants pay only for the days they actually lived in the unit.

How this calculator works

The calculator divides the full monthly rent by the number of days in that specific month to find a daily rate, then multiplies the daily rate by the number of days actually occupied. This is the most common proration method (the “actual days in month” method); some landlords instead use a flat 30-day divisor regardless of the actual month length, which can produce slightly different results.

Check your lease agreement for the specific proration method your landlord uses, since methods can vary. This tool is for general planning and educational purposes only.
