What projectile range means

The range of a projectile is the horizontal distance it covers from launch until it returns to the ground (or a given landing height). It depends on the launch speed, the launch angle, and any difference between launch and landing height.

The formula used

This calculator finds the time of flight by solving the vertical motion equation for when the projectile reaches the ground, accounting for an initial height, then multiplies that time by the constant horizontal velocity component (v·cos θ). When launch and landing heights are equal, this simplifies to the familiar R = v²sin(2θ)/g.

Air resistance is ignored, and gravity is taken as 9.81 m/s². This calculator is intended for general physics education and planning purposes, not precision ballistics.
