What This Calculator Does

This tool calculates pressure — the amount of force distributed over a given surface area — and converts the result into several commonly used pressure units.

The Formula

Pressure is calculated using the standard physics equation P = F / A, where P is pressure in pascals (Pa), F is the applied force in newtons, and A is the surface area in square meters over which the force acts. One pascal equals one newton per square meter.

Understanding the Units

The calculator also converts the pascal result into atmospheres (atm), bar, and pounds per square inch (psi), the units most commonly used in weather, engineering, and everyday pressure gauges. A smaller contact area concentrates the same force into much higher pressure, which is why sharp objects can pierce surfaces that flat ones cannot.

  • Enter area in square meters; if you have a different unit, convert it first for an accurate result.
  • Intended for general educational and planning use.
