What This Calculator Does
This tool converts a dynamic viscosity given in poise (the CGS unit for dynamic viscosity) into kinematic viscosity in stokes (the CGS unit for kinematic viscosity), using the fluid’s density, and also shows equivalents in SI and common lab units.
The Formula
Kinematic viscosity equals dynamic viscosity divided by density: ν (stokes) = μ (poise) ÷ ρ (g/cm³). This works because 1 poise = 1 g/(cm·s) and 1 stokes = 1 cm²/s, so dividing grams-per-centimeter-second by grams-per-cubic-centimeter leaves centimeters-squared-per-second.
- 1 centipoise (cP) = 0.01 poise, and water at 20°C is almost exactly 1 cP.
- 1 centistokes (cSt) = 0.01 stokes, and water at 20°C is almost exactly 1 cSt.
These are standard CGS-to-CGS and CGS-to-SI viscosity conversions used for general reference and educational purposes; always confirm the density value used matches your actual fluid and temperature.
