The pipe weight calculator estimates the total weight of a length of metal or plastic pipe based on its outer diameter, wall thickness, length, and material.
The formula
The cross-sectional area of the pipe wall equals pi times the wall thickness times (outer diameter minus wall thickness). Multiplying that area by the material’s density gives weight per unit length, and multiplying by 12 converts to weight per foot. Total weight is then weight-per-foot times the pipe’s length. This matches the standard steel pipe weight formula (weight/ft = 10.69 x wall x (OD – wall)) when the steel density constant is applied.
This is a general estimate for planning and shipping. Actual pipe schedules (like Schedule 40 or 80) have standardized wall thicknesses — check your pipe’s spec sheet for exact OD and wall values.
